As a senior in high school, I organized Culver City’s first-ever gun buyback as my Girl Scout Gold Award project. Like many youth at the time, I became passionate about gun reform after the Parkland shooting in 2018. I partnered with the Culver City Police Department and local businessman Albert Vera to reduce the number of unsecured firearms in homes. The event collected 67 guns, all of which were permanently destroyed and repurposed into construction rebar used in LA-area projects (including the LA Rams Stadium). As a result, Culver City now holds annual gun buyback events!
