Souvenirs of Youth is an auto-ethnographic documentary that explores the physical relics that four young adults preserved from their girlhood. Narrated by the filmmaker, Shelby Hanson, the film follows the physical objects that herself and three of her closest friends have kept from youth. The film opens with a conversation surrounding the act of moving – whether it be moving houses in childhood or moving out of the “childhood home” in young adulthood. Then, the filmmaker and her three friends, Alexa, Natalie, and Eva, confront the childhood objects that they’ve kept with them in their young adulthood. Using a combination of oral storytelling and archival footage to reflect on these saved physical relics, the film reveals key insights into identity, nostalgia, and the enduring power of memory.
